WM 6.5 WIDGET MANIA
You probably remember when themuzz released his streaming widget which was the first third party widget and then hrhnick released his MySpace widget as only the second third party widget. Both times we hoped that developers would extract the contents of the widgets to understand how they work and then use that to make their own widgets…and that didn’t happen. So we stepped in and we’re providing 50 Widgets today! So this can be your programs list:)
These are not complex widgets. In fact, they’re among the most simplistic widgets that can be made but they do provide a ‘chromeless’ experience that have the feel of apps (and they install like apps). They do require an internet connection when in use (since they are grabbing data from the web) but I think the end experience is still a good one. If you enter your information it is remembered so on the weather widget, for example, it will remember your location. And more than anything, the goal is to bring widgets to the attention of more developers so more complex widgets can start to be released.
Enough background, let’s get to the widgets:
Just to keep some order to 50 widgets let’s start with our own websites:

Herg’’s Corner – where Herg shares his latest creations.
OK, now let’s move on to websites that are the work of our staff, contributors and super close friends:)

Alright, we’re getting somewhere now:) Let’s move on to a bunch of our friends. The goal was to help the WM community so we invited the Windows Mobile community and here are some widgets we created for a lot of the sites that we share content with (oh and we did reach out to a lot of other sites that are also our friends, but they didn’t respond – the invites are still open to anyone who wants a widget though). Let’s do this in alphabetical order:

Herm’s Software (you know, the guy that’s been developing everything lately:))
NRGz Twitter (you’re probably using his ROM now…hey look at what he Tweeted)![]()

Time to rock and roll now. The rest of the widgets belong to sites that have nice mobile websites and are useful in daily life. They range from news sites, to entertainment sites…well you can see for yourself:)
CalcNexus (filled with mobile calculators ranging from financial, tip, health, currency, financial, loans, etc)

DrinkBoy (mobile site with some drink recipes)
EarthComber (location aware app for food, movies, entertainment, etc)![]()

Edmunds (cars)

FlightStats (airplane status)

Gas Buddy (find gas prices)
HopStop (mass transit guide for big cities)

Please Fix the iPhone (know your enemies weaknesses:))
SeamlessWeb (order delivery food for major cities online)

Weather Channel (I defaulted it to 36 hour view)

OK, not bad for a day’s work:) We’ll get into how to make widgets later (sorry, getting through 50 of these things is really a killer). For now, get to downloading and we hope you enjoy them. Thanks of course to the sites on the top portions that are our friends and family and provided icons to use, to themuzz and hrhnick for setting the stage (and hrhnick for his guidance), bluemetalaxe (I used a few of his icons cause they’re sick), Mobile Matt for testing and creation and of course to Anudeep for testing all of these and providing the screenshots.
Remember, this is only for people who are already using WM 6.5 (or if you want to be really prepared for the official release this can be your starting point:)). There’s a cab in the download that you will need to install prior to installing the widgets and once installed you should have no problems installing widgets just like apps. The download is only 650k and includes all of the widgets but you can chose which ones to install.
Update: To clear up one item – the package has all 50 Widgets but you can install as many or as few as you would like. They each could be installed similar to a cab.

Great work!! Seeing all of these widgets (and more) being made for WM6.5 is very impressive!! Thanks for the updates FuzeMobility! Let’s go FUZE NATION!!
If i could parse a url in a mobile app and install a .wgt for it live dynamically that would be awesome. A kind of IE Favorite to Widget…
ummmhh…looks more like quantity over quality! shame really, as the new MS mobile browser is actually quite good.
Ok i have WM 6.5 and installed the pre-required cab, when i click on a widget I get an error saying cannot be opened, not signed or component cannot be found. what gives?
yo, im getting the same problem as king of hearts above.
It says:
“The file ‘name of ANY widget i try to install’ cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try re-installing or restoring this file.”
Any fix for this?
I really want to try out these widgets xD
Im using one from xda-developers (now THATS a site that needs a widget. a very good widget.)
This ROM has no specific name that I can see, but heres the url: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535879
Im using that on my Elfin (HTC Touch)
Hmm, I just thought, considering the name of this site, was the cab made specifically for the fuze?
TensionToast- if you look at the excluded packages in your ROM it includes the widgets package…in other words, you need the widget package in your ROM. The widgets are not Fuze specific.
damn. i should really have read that for myself.
Thank you for your help :3
i feel a little bit stupid now xD
hehe- don’t worry about it. And so you know we’re planning on reworking the widgets in he near future to get some more functionality out of them. It will include at least a back and home key – I didn’t realize that was missing and now that I do I need to play with javascript (which I don’t know a thing about) but I was looking at some other widgets and I think I see how it works…just need to flash my ROM to 6.5 so I can actually test this stuff:)
Eeew… javascript xD
You could just get the:
“Windows Mobile 6.5 Developer Tool Kit”
This includes both standard and professional emulators in a variety of resolutions to use within windows.
You could use these to test your widgets with?
Ive just tested it and widgets are enabled in the emulators.
Damn, I was gonna link you, but forgot.

Given the extreme unmanageability of Start in WM 6.5 there is no way I’m going to dump another 50 icons into it. There ought to be a way to create a widget folder and have them put in there????
i know u could do beautiful things with windows but could u get a tru phone to run it cause right now there is not one on the market that is other than the iphone.. could u run windows in the iphone,
James- you cannot run Windows on an iPhone or iPhone in Windows. You can run Android on a Windows Mobile phone – some phones at least.
Actually you can run windows on an I phone, it doesn’t run well, but check out this video. Iphone running windows 95.

What skin is being used for WM6.5 in these screen shots? What needs to be installed for it to look that way. I really like it.
@FrusrtratedUser
You can easily change Windows Mobile start menu and also create subfolders. Just use a File manager program and navigate to Windows/Start Menu
Here you can add a WIDGET folder and move any of the Widgets you installed to their own little folder.
To install these you have to download the ZIP file. Unzip it to a folder, and copy the folder to your phone. Within the folder you will see a .CAB file. Use your phones File Explorer program to navifate to the folder on your phone and install the CAB file to your phone. Then navigate to the folder and install on what ever Widget you want to install. It will prompt you to verify and such. Then when you open your start menu you will see the Widget or Widgets if you choose to install a few.
Keep in mind these are not really app widgets like MSN Money or MSN Weather. They are basically just a web viewer that allows you to view a mobile webpage. If the page takes forever to load there is no stop button. There is no Zoom button if the site looks small. Some “widgets” are OK, but most are not the greatest. If there is a site Widget you like, it may be better to save that as a link in your web browser favorites. It will look the same, but you have more control.
thanx for info, i installed the cab but when trying to open any of the widgets a screen pops up and says the file cannot be opened it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of its components cannot be found…what did i do wrong TriAxis can you help!?
you need to install this first http://www.todaypda.com/wm_widget/enable_widgets_wm6.5.cab that enables widgets. This from Themuzz post over at XDA who was one of the first ones to make a widget
