Stolen Diamond 2 Wiped Clean

DiamondClean Some of you may have heard that a Diamond 2 was stolen from the head of Telstra recently. This caused an uproar (aside from the thievery) because of the fear that trade secrets would be released early. Well Microsoft has stated that they were able to remotely wipe the phone clean of all private data including the user interface (you know, TF3D) since those items were not a part of the ROM. And honestly, you can’t go around stealing someone’s Diamond 2 – that’s like stealing someone’s wife…you just don’t do that:) Next time Microsoft will figure out how to remotely brick a phone and then they’ll really make sure their trade secrets are secure.

For those of you who use a corporate exchange server, you should also know that your IT technician can configure your server to permit a remote wipe of your data in a similar situation from a Windows Phone so you may want to talk to them if this is a real concern of yours.

I’m curious to know if you could remotely wipe the device if , say, the SIM card has been removed. I can’t imagine there is a catch safe for the average corporate handset user. You remove the SIM card and you essentially remove the unique ID for the device and any chance of it communicating with the server (with the exception of wifi).

At any event, you’re saying the ROM is intact and therefore this person has a working version of WM 6.5?

I would presume a 6.5ROM is out there but there are plenty of ways to get that without stealing a phone. There’s a 6.5 ROM floating around XDA. I’m not sure what version (if they were betas or near completion).
In our forums I psoted a few things the other day on tracking a stolen phone. One of them is trigged by a SIM removal and the next SIM extered will trigger an SMS with a geotag. If the thief is highly sophisticated they would presumably remove the SIM and never permit it online again until wiped clean (not sure if the device ID shows on networks but it may). Most people stealing phones don’t know that Windows can be set up in these ways so even with a new SIM you can have some protection.

Is there a way I can do that with WM 6.1 if my phone gets stolen?

remtoe wipe or track it? To use remote wipe you need an exchange server properly set up so chances are you cannot do it unless you connect to a corproate account. Regarding tracking your phone, that you can do. We’ve had a few threads on it in the forums:
