Snap a Photo of a Barcode and Automatically Compare Prices Online

BarcoramaHere’s the concept – you walk into a store to buy something, take your Fuze out and open Barcorama and it takes a photo of the barcode and it reads the barcode and then sends the code to a Google search to compare prices. All in a few seconds. How does it work? It’s awesome! I know a lot of you have been waiting for this application and we have senior member hypest at XDA to thank.

Use the camera in landscape mode and it’s literally seconds to get a result.  If you go to ‘Open" in the application you can bring up the past barcode pictures you have taken.

So run over here to XDA and download the file. This is a zip file that contains a folder. Here are your options – open the zip on your PC in which case you need to move the ENTIRE folder to your Fuze. There is barcorama 2a file called Baracoma.exe within that file that you run from your Fuze. The second option is to move the zip to your Fuze and then unzip it using the Fuze’s built in Zip application (located in Programs – Tools) and you’ll end up in the same place. Now to make this easier for future use you should create a shortcut of Barcorama.exe and move it to My Device – Windows (give it a second to load) Start Menu – Programs and you’ll have a shortcut in your programs file (so when you go to Start – Programs it will be there for you like you like it:) ) You can use Total Commander for this. If you want to change the website it searches from (default is Google Products) or the browser it opens it (default is Internet Explorer) just hit the settings button and you’ll see a screen with both that’s pretty easy to modify.

And remember – Hypest is saving us all money so you may want to buy him a cup of coffee for his efforts:) I can’t stop taking photos of random products!!!

i do not know where to unzip the file and how to create a shortcut.. i have total commander.. please help..

And… if all the picture taking… and re-taking… and fiddling get you down, you can always hand-enter (*gasp*) the UPC right into Google Products (or ISBN for books).

Of course, you could also use the hand-writing recognition entry so the process still maintains some element of “cool.”

Please forgive my blasphemy.

I reconfigured mine to use opera “\windows\OperaL.exe” and pricegrabber “http://www.pricegrabber.com/search.php?form_keyword=!###!”

You can make these changes using word mobile in “settings.txt” just make sure you dont save it as a word doc!

works like a charm, take that g1

Will this application work on the AT&T Tilt as well?

It sounds great and it shows a very creative spirit to have produced such a program for us to use.

Jim

Jim – it does work on the tilt (I posted this on TiltMobility as well:) )
Badge- there’s lots of stuff we can do manually but we have a Fuze so why should we?:)
Aldrin – to unzip the file from your Fuze just mvoe the zip to your Fuze then go to Start, Programs, Tools, Zip and open that application. Once that is open find the Barcorama zip file on your Fuze then go to Menu, Action, Extract and it will unzip the file. To make a shortcut using Total Commander open up Total COmmander and find the Barcorama.exe file and when it is highlighted go to “File” in the lower left then go to >>>>>> (A) on top and then ‘Create Shortcut” and hit the ‘Tree’ button and point it to Windows – Start Menu – Programs and you’re done

William- good call:)

I can’t get it to work on the Tilt… i snap the picture and then the quality gets degraded as it moves back to the barcorama app, so it always tells me No Barcode. any ideas?

thanks david

Jonathan – the Tilt always ahd a problem with picture delay. You can get rid of most of it with Advanced Config but what I recomend is that when you take the photo just keep holding the camera still even after the snap sound is done. For some reason there’s a capture delay. I think advanced config takes care of most of it but I always found it a little frustrating on that phone that the photo would appear on the screen and then reappear blurry a second later.

[...] If I wanted to compare prices of items by just snapping a photo of the barcode there’s an app for that called Barcorama. [...]

Another app trying to follow I phone too bad it works for crap brings you to google website, I can do that and not have to start two programs.
