Memoirs of a Web Server

Remember these things? Initially, to make flashing roms and reinstalling software a little easier for myself I tossed all the cabs I used onto my server so could flash anywhere on the run and still get my programs back quickly. A few months later it occurred to me that if I shared the site with everyone else on XDA I could watch the logs to see XDA’s visitor demographics including where they were from and what they were using to visit my site. Most interestingly I could see of the programs I put on my site which were in the greatest demand (which software was downloaded the most frequently) both to satisfy my curiosity and to offer that information to the developers to give them a high five in the form of a pie chart. A few months later, December of 2008, I got rid of the password and said hello to Google and that’s when things got interesting.

Maybe some of you share this idiosyncrasy that values this information so much that you’d make your own website just to acquire it. But I would like to save you the trouble so let me share with you some tidbits from and reflections on my parsed logs while resisting the temptation to plug my site. Warning, this article is above-average in length.

Mobility Digest Welcomes Doug Simmons!

me The title says it all doesn’t it? After years of asking my Buddy Doug Simmons (C’mon’ you had to ask, he’s the guy behind blownfuze.org) to jump over to our community, he finally gave in! Doug is one of the most knowledgeable people in all our Mobility Community. His contributions at blownfuze.org are tremendous and have helped thousands of people. There is a TON of great information and it all was collected and posted by him. Anyway, I have always thought that we should join together and continue to help our community and build awareness to the awesome capabilities our devices have.  That was yesterday, today, he is part of Mobility Digest! I know some of you might be thinking that Doug has a “tell it how it is” approach to things and can be a little rough around the edges. Well, he is still going to tell it exactly like it is, but with just a few less colorful words. LOL So you can count on Doug’s humor, candidness, willingness to address any issue, and tell you exactly how he feels unrestrained. I am very excited to have my buddy Doug part of our website and I cannot wait to read his articles, reviews, editorials, and whatever else he feels like writing! Don’t tell him cause I don’t want him to get a big head, but I am also a fan! I am also hopeful that I can talk him into doing some podcasts with me. Maybe we could call it the D2 Mobility Digest Podcast? Lot’s of possibilities. In any case, please help me welcome the one, the only, Doug Simmons to Mobility Digest!

Oh wait, there’s more, I also asked Doug to write up a small bio on himself so I could introduce him. The result is a hilarious adventure in all his former exploits! Jump after the break to get to know the man behind blownfuze.org, Doug Simmons a little better!

(Re)Enabling Group Texts and Emails

group contactsA while back we showed you the new group text and email feature in 6.5.2. There were rumors floating around that MS was going to remove this from future releases as it was not a popular feature. In many of the recent ROMs the feature is missing. It turns out that MS did not remove the ability to do group texts and emails – they just disabled it. So all you need to do to enable it is a little registry change:

HKCU\Security\Security\Software\Microsoft\Activesync\Contact Groups – set to 1

That was simple:)

UPDATE: A lite version with the first two boards is available here

Enabling Ringtones

Ringtone MakerWe’ve done our fair share of tips and tricks around here but one that we didn’t report on is changing the restriction on ringtone limits. Some phones (ok it probably only applies to stock ROMs) limit the size of the ringtone you are allowed to have. So when you go to load a ringtone you can’t add those sound files. This issue came up in our forums the other day and jimski was there with a response. It’s just a simple registry tweak: Change Key: HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds – File SizeLimit = 0 (from 300000 or whatever it is now).

Our forums are filled with tips, tricks and friendly people (who don’t flame you if you don’t know how to manually change your registry) so if you haven’t been there in a while drop by.

Marketplace Does Have Good Dev Support

I don’t have enough fingers to count how many articles I’ve read about Marketplace and how it’s unfriendly to developers, nonresponsive, etc. Well I’ve had several opportunities to test these theories both first hand and through conversations with some developers and as it turns out, Marketplace is a pretty friendly place. Let me start with some first hand experiences. I was talking to some developers and when they had questions regarding app submissions I did the simple task of emailing MS and promptly received an email from people within Marketplace addressing the questions. It was far from painful and far from the stories I had heard. And as questions arose the same process played out, with people within Marketplace providing an individual contact person within Marketplace to assist with the submission process.

Just the other day, I put some of the internet rumors to the test. A story that’s made the rounds is that no developers got paid from Marketplace last month. A Marketplaces spokesperson informed me that “Developers are being paid for their applications in Windows Marketplace. We had the first payout cycle in December, and are executing the second payment cycle throughout January. There are some isolated cases where developers are missing key information needed to process their payment and we are working to address those issues.” I also asked about why developers are penalized by upgrading their applications by having the reviews of their apps deleted entirely and also losing their SKU/hyperlink which makes it harder for developers to link to their apps. I was told “We are aware of this issue and are working on a solution that will be available soon.” Many of the other responses that I was provided dealt with individual applications or individual developers and aren’t appropriate to share but my experiences have been confirmed by developers. If there is a problem, a simple email does seem to do the trick and you should be able to get a  prompt response to any reasonable question.

I’m not here to say that Marketplace is perfect but I do think it’s received some pretty harsh reporting and from the outside it’s hard to tell if it’s really a cold cold world…it’s not. If you’re a developer considering joining Marketplace don’t be afraid. If you run into any problems just ask nicely…
