New Kinoma Play update: Even Better Twitter, configurable Close, and more…
Your memory isn’t failing you —they’ve already updated Kinoma Play once this month. But they just can’t help making it better and cooler!
In addition to the general speed and reliability improvements they make with every release, here’s what’s new,
- Faster — Now remembers (“caches”) your Home and Personal timeline tweets across launches, making it even faster.
- Supports more photo services — Did you know Kinoma Play automatically displays Twitpic and yfrog images inline, right inside tweets? Now it supports flic.kr and Mobypicture as well!
New features
- Super-configurable Close behavior — Kinoma Play’s Close button follows the Windows Mobile standard by default. But with the Advanced Settings app’s new X Button setting, you can also choose to Exit when you tap the Close button, or Exit when you tap-and-hold the Close button.
And more
- App Store — The App Store by MobiHand (formerly “MobiHand Store”) now supports MobiHand coupon codes. Have you installed any of the hundreds of great, free apps available in the App Store yet? If not, try it out today!
- Improved YouTube reliability — Some videos wouldn’t play due to a YouTube bug, which Kinoma Play now includes a workaround for.
- Last.fm — Scrobbling is now even more reliable.
- Bing — Windows Live Image search is now Bing Images search.

Well, this is a BIG update for me. The ability to finally close Kinoma with the X in the corner? HUGE. It’s been my #1 complaint.
There’s another HUGE feature not mentioned in this article to take notice to.
First, to get these new features, you have to go into Advanced Settings and click the update. The advanced settings don’t automatically update with the main program update.
Once you do this, check out your new options. Not only do you have the X button behavior option, but you can DISABLE THE SENSOR! I personally NEVER enjoyed the auto-orientation of Kinoma Play. It runs video like crap on my Touch Pro, so I just use it for audio streaming. I have NO desire for the auto-orientation. It’s finally able to be disabled.
So, this is a big update for me. I avoid twitter like the plague, so I don’t much care for what seems to be a big twitter update.
I also have NO idea what Matt is referring to with the History showing the correct time. I spent a few minutes looking for it… no idea.
I think Matt may be the only Kinoma fan who matches my level of enthusiasm for it. Now if only we could get some hardware-accelerated UI goodness, and hardware-assisted video playback …
The orientation setting showed up a few weeks back (I think with an update specifically to the “advanced settings” app, rather than the overall application). They also updated the algorithm for the orientation adjustment to be a bit less spazzy. I’m happy to keep it off — makes one-handed/blind operation easier in the car, since I don’t have to worry about what orientation it thinks it’s got when using the d-pad that way.
Matt’s been pushing Kinoma for months now, but before I plop down $30 or so to try it (pretty lame that you can’t trial a full version for 15 or 30 days), can someone please give me a little feedback?
I have an AT&T Fuze, and I use CorePlayer with it (I paid for the full version). It does most things very well, but still isn’t up to the iPhone in terms of smooth video playback. When I encode DVDs to play them on my phone, I have to do it in sub-VGA res or the processor can’t keep up (is that a function of the player or the processor, I don’t know). It’s no big deal because the screen res is so good that the vids still look great. But sometimes there is still some skipping and the vid and audio can get out of sync. Equally as important, I use BT stereo headphones to listen to music on my Fuze and I’m so annoyed that CorePlayer hasn’t figured out how to make the A2DP controls on my headphones control CorePlayer! This worked perfectly on my Tilt, but not on the Fuze… it just starts WMP anytime I hit a button!
So has Kinoma figured out the A2DP controls for the Fuze? And how does the video quality/smoothness compare to other video players out there? Thanks very much for any feedback anyone can provide.
I have left a feature request to allow custom skin support here:
