How to Change the Default Page on The Internet Tab

Internet Tab For those of you who were really carefully watching the PTT video you may have noticed that my internet tab showed Fuze Moblity as the preset website (and not device.home as is standard). So how was it done? Senior XDA Member ITNV provided the simple instructions. Simply use File Explorer to navigate to \Application Data\Manila and find a file called “InternetPortal-en-US.xml” and copy that to your PC. Open notepad and drop that file into it and you’ll see the text of that file. Simple rename the Text and NavigateURL section and the text/website will appear on your TF3D tab and it will navigate to the website you told it to. So take that file from your PC and replace the one on your Fuze. I’m sure you’re all going to map it to Tiltmobility.com though so here are the lines:

NavigateUrl=”http://fuzemobility.com/”
Text=”Fuze Mobility”

I haven’t tinkered yet but based on what the xml file has in it, it appears to be pretty simple to change the ‘globe’ image or resize it by simply editing this file.

By the way- notice that the preinstalled HTC link on the tab takes you to a page that displays an “Oops” message? That’s probably because they leaked the site early and then they changed the URL. Amazing that they haven’t fixed this though.

Hi — trying to do this and I know the file is there, but when I try to find it on ActiveSync it doesn’t show up. Any suggestions? Thanks for all of your help and ideas — I’m loving my Fuze so far and I’ll love it even more with the tweaks!

You can always make these changes within the Fuze itself. Find that file using the Fuze’s File Explorer then copy it to the storage card – then you can extract it to your PC, modify it and move it back using File Explorer in the Fuze again.
Glad we could help:)

when I tried to do this and made the changes to the file on my PC, I was not able to close and save the file so I could transfer it back to my Fuze. The message said the file had read only attributes. I could change the name of the file, but didn’t know if that would mess it up when I put it back on my Fuze with a different name. Any suggestions?

Wouldn’t you achieve the same results simply by setting the default home page in Opera to the location you want?

Okay, made the change and transferred the file back into my phone. But it didn’t make the change and put Google in there. Instead, it now just says Launch Browser where MEdia Net used to be. I’m not sure what I might have done wrong, but this works for me because I just wanted to open the browser via the globe icon without getting routed to the AT&T page every time. I can just set my home page to Google and get what I want that way. I’m off to scan through the other possible tweaks and see what I can do. Thanks!

Melissa, how did you change and save the edited file? Did you have to rename it? When I edited it on my pc in notepad, it wouldn’t let me save it under the original file name.

Gary, I did a Save As and named it InternetPortal-en-US.xml . And it will probably ask you if you want to replace the other one, to which I said Yes. That seemed to work, although not perfectly considering that Google isn’t listed. But at least it got rid of the MEdiaNet page. Good luck!

Thanks Melissa. My Fuze won’t let me do that. Says the file has read only protection. Even when I made the changes and saved it at a different location on my computer, when I transfer the edited file back it won’t let me replace the existing file-same message of “read only protection”. Oh well.

Do you mean when you transferred the edited file back to your phone? One way I got around previous difficulties was by copying the original file to my Storage Card, and then accessing it on my computer through the Storage Card. Then when I transferred it back to my phone, I transferred it onto my Storage Card. From there, I found it on my phone (not connected via ActiveSync, only using my phone) and copied it. I then went into the Manila folder and did Edit–>Paste. It asked me if I wanted to replace it and I said Yes.

If that still doesn’t work, you might be able to access the Properties of the file in your phone’s Manila folder to see if you can uncheck a Read-Only option. I hope it works for you. :)

Gary – If your phone is not letting you do the transfer then just open the original xml using Total Commander and change the attributes so it’s no longer read only. Just hit ‘properties’ and change the check boxes.

Very cool tweak. I have been looking for a way to do this since I first used the internet tab. It’s too bad so many things need to be tweaked instead of just changed in a preferences menu.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the default page that loads when you have the keyboard out and you hit the “web search” button?

Thanks for the help, just got it to work. Question-should I now go back and make that file as “read only” and “system”?

I did not (so it’s easier to change next time:) ) but if you want to you can- here’s no real impact to it either way. Just use Total Commander

For some reason, the globe link doesn’t open the defalut Opera homepage so you have to edit this file.

I tried to do this tweak just a minute ago, and it worked out better than I had hoped. I must have messed it up because now the browser defaults to what is specified in the options menu and not what I specified in the XML file. I definitely prefer it to work like that. Another thing I noticed, which is probably unrelated, but now the YouTube app appears at the top of my booksmarks on the internet tab, and it once again works where as I could get it to download new videos just yesterday.

Mine actually does go to my Opera Homepage.

I have my own HTML page on all my PC’s/Devices (sync’d via LiveMesh), which has many of my common links on it. I set this as my default page for Opera, and when I click on the globe in the Internet tab it opens my page (which is a HTML file on the Fuze).

Not sure why this would be different for any other Fuze with a stock AT&T ROM. I’ve done nothing special to modify this behavior.

I started playing with it some more and if you delete the NavigationURL line, the globe will automatically take you to your Opera home page. Your InternetPortal file must not have that line in it.

That’s a good find, though! I’ll add it to the XDA post.

ITNV,

I’ve been thinking about why my default setup was different. While I am running a stock ROM, I did “skip the bloat” on setup, and manually installed TF3D (with the instructions here on Fuze Site)

So perhaps something in those AT&T customizations inserts the navigationURL.

I’m sure you’re right. The default page it was forcing me to was device.home, which was AT&T’s MEdia Net page.

I Had the same issue could not copy it back so I created a new file copy the xml over and renamed it and copied it back to the device.

It then did not give me the default homepage that I entered in the xml it went to my default in opera and no label.
I looks like it was ignoring the xml which it was.

The key is the first line of the xml

encoding is utf-16

once I saved the file in my text editor (ultra edit)
as utf-16 all worked as expected

I pasted the file to my memory card but when I explored it while connected to the PC, no file showed up. The folder I have on the card shows up but no file. Does anyone know how to get it to show up or if there is another way to get the file to my pc?

It does show up for me…you can always email it to yourself if you need to though:) Or you can zip it (it’s in the Tools I think) to see if that helps…

Make sure the options to show hidden and system files are enabled on your PC.

If you’re not sure how to do that: http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+show+hidden+and+system+files

Thanks, Thats all it took.

Heres what I have:

\Windows\iexplore.exe
True

With these settings it does it work. It just says launch internet and it goes right back to defaulting to opera. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

\Windows\iexplore.exe

\Windows\iexplore.exeTrue

Jesus nevermind I can’t even show you guys. I’ll just suffer with it being shitty.

I couldn’t get it to work through Vista, but I used my work PC with XP and had no issues. Had to copy the file to PC, made the edit (saved it as a different name then changed it back to the original) then deleted the original file through the phone then pasted the edited one. PERFECT! No more crappy media.net home page.
