Google’s Android Now Running Better Than Ever On Your Fuze/Touch Pro
There has been a lot of buzz about the Google Android Devices, and I must say they all look really cool. And like all things cool, we must have them on our device no matter if it is an AT&T Fuze or HTC Touch Pro! It has got to be ported. I know you are thinking that Google Android has already been ported, what is the guy talking about? It has, but now it has been ported better than ever. Our good Friend and Fuze/Touch Pro Expert over at BlownFuze.org Doug Simmons dropped me this email today and I thought I would post his excellent article as it was. Check it out:
Running Google’s Android on the Tilt/Kaiser has been possible for some time however the hardware, specifically the resolution, made it less than awesome and made you wishing someone would get this sucker ported to the Fuze. Well folks noellenchris of XDA pulled it off. Ideally I prefer to tout software I’ve tried myself but I gave my momma my Fuze. So I used the boys in #xda-devs to test a slightly tweaked version I made with the AT&T MEdiaNet settings in and according to Jason8 data works out of the box (out of the zip, rather).
To get it running, download this – http://blownfuze.org/files/GoogleAndroid_FuzePort_ATTMEdiaNet_noellenchris_11-03-09.zip – and unzip it onto the root of your SD chip. In WinMo go in File Explorer, to Storage Card and tap haret.exe which is the Linux bootloader and it will start up. You do not need to format or do anything else to your chip and it won’t harm your existing WinMo rom. When you’re tired of it, just soft reset and you’re back in WinMo. Further instructions from XDA – http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4873880#post4873880 and keep an eye on that thread if you get obsessed and want updates down the line.
Known limitations include no AT&T keymap (it uses the Euro layout with the numbers on top), you may not be able to charge the phone while running Android and no SMS unless you download Google Voice (and have an account) from Marketplace. This is Android 1.6 not 2.0 which means no, sorry, you cannot run the awesome Google Maps Navigation software. But hey, Android baby. This is probably as close to Android as you’ll get with AT&T so check out life on the other side. Did I mention Android’s Linux?

Well hang tight simbadogg, someone pulled it off for the Tilt (first tilt). I bet most of the people working on these projects are not AT&T, but at least one of them is and he knows how to make a keymap for this kind of situation and may do so sooner or later.
Wow 140 downloads from fuzemobility visitors. It spread to other sites fast, about 500 downloads total and counting. Got a visit from someone on a gatesfoundation.org host… could it be the big guy? If it is, he runs firefox.
@ Doug Simmons – if gates knew that one of his employees was running firefox he’d go all Steve Ballmer on them:)
I thought it ran a lot smoother then it should. I am now envious of all Android users. I can’t believe something like this could be ported over, nevertheless, run so smoothly. Heck it runs just as well as TF3D 2.1, and 2.5. I do say… my next device will be an Android unless M$ would wake up and make something decent…
ive tested this on my att fuze, the keymapping is definately made for the cdma touchpro, but if you think of a keyboard with numbers on top instead of being function keys, youll be ok. its pretty cool to play around with for a little bit but its definately nothing worth keeping at this point. hopefully xda will work some more developing magic and get us a fully functioning system so we can really see what all this droid fuss is about.
@David K
I don’t think Bill Gates would mind. While he still is a significant stake in MSFT stock, his time is largely spent running his philanthropic organization, an investment fund, and his consulting business. He’d be unwise not to try out competitors’ products, so it could be the big guy himself.
Secondly, I tried running this on my fuze. Other than that keymapping issue mentioned before (seems to want the regular GSM Touch Pro layout), there is some work to be done. It drains battery like a mofo… if I turn on wifi and bluetooth, my phone will be dead within the hour. While it’s much closer to being usable for daily activities (phone, MMS, data work fine for me), I’ll just boot up android now and then to try out the interface and play with it for a few minutes before restarting.
The capacitive touch feedback on the bottom panel is neat. I wish HTC would’ve taken more advantage of this in TF3D.
@Chris J
You should check out Mobile shell. That UI is always smooth, looks fancier than either android or manilla. It really impressed me- I didn’t think my fuze was powerful enough to run like that.
@Cory @MS, yeah MS is WICKED nice, but I find myself levitating back to TF3D for a number of reasons. Mainly, the SMS/Email previews, integrated weather, improved sms, contacts, etc. There are plusses and minuses for both MS3 and TF3D.
Back to the main discussion though, did anyone else find their android to be RIDICULOUSLY slow? One click would take about 5 seconds to register for something. it’s so cool, but excruciatingly slow
I loaded it, and I am very impressed. It runs a little slow initially, but make sure you select power off before you reset back to WinMo. It keeps the settings when you reload it.
I have been a WinMo fan since PPC (Compaq Ipaq). M$ is definitely behind the competition. They should be embarrassed that HTC made up the HD2 GUI to totally cover the fact that it is a WinMo device.
If someone from Microsoft is reading this. Impress me, or the WinMo faithful will follow the Android bandwagon.
I tried it for maybe 15 min, and it didn’t seem slow to me. It may be your sd card. I have a 1 g card that I use for flashing. I formatted it, and then loaded up the android stuff. I was surprised how well it worked, to be honest. I felt lost for those 15 minutes, and it did not make me a convert at all, lol. It seems like it would be easy to learn to use, and it’s probably more user-friendly for noobs. I don’t think it’s for me.
Cue the True Believers to flame me, lol.
Man this thing rocks! I am sold on Android now. Not so much this version on a Fuze – somewhat handicapped – but I can see the potential now. Much more intuitive phone interface – and I LOVE the seamless interface with Google. I do everything Google / GMAIL – so being able to see all my calendars at once and actually update them! Wow! Unless Google comes out with GMail and Calendar for WM – my next phone will probably be an Anodroid phone.
Need assistance with install. Downloaded and saved to SD/windows (I suppose that is what is meant by root.)
After running haret.exe and the boot sequence processes, I get this message:
“Failed to find rootfs.img on SD card. You need to unzip a rootfs zip file to the root of your SD card. /bin/sh: can’t access tty; job control turned off”
Of course, when I say “saved” I mean “unzipped”.
And, yes, I have posted this question on the XDA thread as well.
Thx
Hey Mark,
It says to unzip it to the root of your SD card. This means that you need to unzip it to the SD card itself, not in any folder. That should fix it for you.
Nikhil
Thanks, Nikhil.
Tried fix and came up with same result. At this point, I think my error is related to some enterprise security features.
I’ll keep trying.
Having the same problem as Mark A. I unzipped it to the root folder and it keeps saying failed to find rootfs.img on SD card.
rob p: how about, if you have a chip reader and microsd to sd sleeve, trying to copy the unzipped files directly to the chip and not through activesync? longshot ..
hmm, that’s kinda how i was trying it. i’ll try activesync this time… haha
either way, thanks for the quick reply. your blownfuze.org was THE FIRST website i found when i got my fuze two novembers ago.
assuming you’re an AT&T user, doesn’t it just piss you the hell off that the Nexus One is going to be on T-Mobile? No android love from AT&T, just the ridiculously awesome network of developers!
Nope, AT&T made it clear a while ago that by renewing my contract to get a tilt 2 cheaper would subject me to a series of frustrations including joining their family that is unfriendly with my favorite company. No surprise whatsoever. But I am surprised at how they’ve been defending themselves both from their mistakes and from Verizon’s attack with Luke Wilson constantly pointing out that we can browse and surf at the same time. I’d say less than a tenth of a percent of AT&T subscribers currently on the phone are doing that at a given time.
I like how Google’s throwing some love to the underdog (well, at least in this country they’re the underdog). If I run into enough money (which I could if I sold some of my google shares) I would either buy the Google phone and become a T-Mobile and AT&T customer or I would buy some Deutsche Telecom (NYSE:ADR) shares.
Just in case that hyperlink didn’t work (never tried tagging a post here), take a glance at this: http://www.google.com/finance?chdnp=1&chdd=1&chds=1&chdv=1&chvs=maximized&chdeh=0&chdet=1262206800000&chddm=49266&chls=IntervalBasedLine&cmpto=NYSE:T&cmptdms=0&q=NYSE:DT&ntsp=0
I can’t get myself to spend $500+ on an unlocked phone on a network that has zero 3G coverage in my area (city of about 100,000 people two hours east of Dallas just south of I-20, Tyler, TX) on T-Mobile, plus if I bought it anyway I couldn’t use 3G since it won’t work on AT&T bands.
I understand what you mean by the “underdog” of T-Mobile (compared to its giant brother? mother? cousin? i don’t know – in europe), but doesn’t T-Mobile have the fewest subscribers in the US compared to AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint? Sprint might be smaller… anyway if I move to a larger city in the next year or so (when my contract is up with AT&T) i might consider moving to T-Mobile. I just need to see how the signal is and all that stuff, gotta do my research!
But yeah, active sync didn’t work either. I unzipped the file, it was in one folder, moved it to the microSD card, ran the program, but no dice. If it helps I’m running a WM 6.5 Tael ROM, can’t remember which version though…
T-Mobile’s number four with 33m subscribers. Sprint has 48m, AT&T Mobility has 82m, Verizon Wireless in the lead with 89m.
Just to double check, you copied the files to the root directory of the chip, then you went into file explorer on the phone and hit haret.exe then hit the button, right? And then what happened?
yep, linux began to load, with the black background and tiny tiny white text. just like mark a above me said he got this message after the white text would load up the screen:
“Failed to find rootfs.img on SD card. You need to unzip a rootfs zip file to the root of your SD card. /bin/sh: can’t access tty; job control turned off”
so i just had to do a soft reset back into WM.
Any chance you have a spare microsd lying around?
Just for the hell of it (this probably won’t help), on your computer right click the rootfs file, properties, general tab and make sure it’s not hidden or read-only. Then do the same with total commander on the phone.
Another longshot (I can’t remember reading if this makes a difference or not), but did you hardspl the phone?
actually i do, but it’s in my nokia n85 and i have a lot of files on it… don’t really wanna mess with that.
it shows up so i don’t believe they’re hidden, and it shows under permissions everything is ok, so i don’t know what the deal is.
yes i did a hard spl a while back when i got my first cooked ROMs.
Trying to come up with something for you but if you’re determined take a look here, others had the same problem and maybe someone gave them the right answer.
parenthetically there have since been newer and presumably better releases including a 2.0.1 but I don’t have the fuze anymore to tinker with it to get data working out of the box to try to make this easier for others though it may already be working, I see it has the AT&T access point settings in it. If you’re up for it, why not give yourself a clean slate, delete any directories on your chip that might have been created (sort by dates modified) when you tried to boot the other Android or strange files, download and unzip this – http://blownfuze.org/files/AndroidEclair_12-24-09.zip – drag and drop to the chip’s root folder and see what happens. Same haret.exe procedure to boot.
that new link worked! the eclair build that is. except when i was trying to set it up, i unchecked wi-fi cuz i didn’t want it on, and it froze on me. had to pull the battery. reloading it now…
hey, i unzipped the file, its on my phone but when i go in and push haret it wants me to liusten for a connection? and it wont wark.

Some have said on XDA that some problems like hard button issues resolved themselves after having booted it a couple times, so maybe do that if you’re having such problems.
I gave my ol’ lady my Fuze when I got my Tilt 2 so I couldn’t test this myself to see what doesn’t work. Does data work right off the first boot? Do the hard buttons not work? Any problems like the buttons resolve themselves after a few more boots (someone on xda reported that)? Is this something you’d actually use for more than just a half hour to see what it’s like? Resolution look good, smoothness of whatever animates look good and so on? Can you get push gmail working? Does the phone not charge when it’s running Android? GPS, wifi, bluetooth? Bandwidth fast?
Would you recommend it to someone in their sixties?
