ESPN Section 140
Just browsing Microsoft’s Mobile Phone site and saw a banner for “ESPN Section 140” and it led to some good stuff:) Take a look here for the full link to Section 140. Section 140 is a way to chat online during college football games and we’ll get to that in a second but when testing this I also realized that ESPN finally fixed their website for mobile viewing. The old mobile site was painful (see the image on the left) and the new site…dare I say is finger friendly and easy to read and navigate. Not sure when it happened but I like it:) Ok, let’s get back to Section 140 now (image on right) which is “powered by Windows phone”. If you fire up your WM device and go to espn.com (you’ll be redirected to m/espn.com) go to ‘Scores by Sport” and then “NCAA Football” and if you login you can participate to trash talk about the games.
Let’s do it more formally. From their website:
What is Section 140?
- A new MOBILE destination to cheer, comment and maybe talk a little trash with other College Football fans from all across the country.
- A MOBILE sounding board where you can join the conversation from anywhere during the game.
- A real-time, MOBILE place to meet like-minded and not so like-minded fans while your teams are on the field.
- A place to interact with ESPN College Football writers in the Virtual Press Box. How do I get there during College Football Games?
- Go directly to ESPN.com on your mobile device and log in. New to ESPN Mobile? Create an account on ESPN.com or directly from ESPN Mobile.
- Select NCAA Football or "Scores by Sport/NCAA Football" and select a game through our Top 25 list or by Conference.
- While following the game in ESPN’s GameCast environment, access Section 140 and comment on live game action. Submit your comments and join ESPN’s community of live game discussion in Section 140.
It’s that easy.
- A little applause for ESPN for fixing up their site and for MS and ESPN actually giving Windows phones a little love. Thanks guys

FYI, using Opera on my Tilt2 and the old (ugly) ESPN mobile site shows up. However using IE or IRIS allows me to view the new (pretty) ESPN mobile site.
newest version of Opera Mobile loads new ESPN site (it has for at least a couple of weeks). Using Opera Mobile on updated AT&T Fuze rom still loads old site.
Anyone know the direct URL to the new ESPN mobile site?
try m.espn.com in Opera or change the preferences in Opera to be viewed as a mobile browser. The mobile site is actually good. the desktop site on a mobile is painful.
try this full link if m.espn.com doesn’t work in Opera: http://m.espn.go.com/wireless/index?w=18vin&i=MCOM
tried all of those suggestions…still loads the old mobile site.
Maybe ESPN will update on their end to detect this version of Opera Mobile (Google made some changes for mobile gmail in this version recently).
Using Opera 9.5 on Tilt2 (Stock Rom):
espn.mobi and m.espn.com both re-direct to:
http://m.espn.go.com/wireless/index?w=18vin&i=MCOM
Which displays the old site. However all three of those links display the new site in IRIS.
Opera 9.5 on Fuze (cooked 6.5 ROM) and I’m redirected to the same above address, which is the new site for me.
Cool. So far section 140 is just a bunch of ignorant trash talking from idiots with nothing better to do on a Thursday afternoon than call other people names.
Wait, um…
this is the iPhone site guys. it’s been up there for months. i first noticed it when i used the Iris browser (which is Webkit based like Safari). it looks MUCH better than the old site but my current phone (Treo 700wx) doesn’t like it at all. i’m waiting on my TP2 order to be fulfilled so i can get back in on this since i visit that site so much.
