Breaking News: Microsoft Pulls The Plug On WinMo 6.5 Porting By XDA

nofuzewinmo6 The 800 pound Gorilla has just flexed his muscles and shut down arguably one of the most followed ROM’s in the Raphael Forum on XDA-Developers.com. Da_G who has been working on this thread:

[ROM][WWE][09.03.09]Windows Mobile 6.5 21176 ROM / Kitchen for Fuze/TouchPro [GSM]

Has had all of the links removed due to a complaint from Microsoft. If you look hard enough though, there are still some mirrors available. If there is some good news, the threads at XDA have not been closed or removed.

If you are wondering how well this ROM worked, we have a great review for you by Herg62123 that you can see here: http://www.mobilitydigest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=947

We’ll keep you posted on any further developments, but I thought that this was pretty interesting that Microsoft would take these steps to Stop hinder the efforts of porting WinMo 6.5.

I think it is a little premature to have conspiracy theories or questions about censure. I don’t like M$ anymore then the next person, but maybe there is a legit reason for their current actions that have to do with security or some other issue they have identified and are concerned about. sure it could be about ownership of the product (which they do own by the way), but it also might now be.

Everyone seems to forget that without big bad M$ we would have nothing to be playing with. And if you think there would just be “something else”, well that has not happened and does not look like it will any time soon.

its pretty obvious this was going to happen at one point or another. m$ didnt release the OS yet therefore its only normal they dont want us to have it. and being such a big company, it doesnt take a lot to have it taken down.

i feel bad…..the day after i made my reveiw microsoft pulls the plug on da_g. i feel so bad about this.

Well let me just say this: sunuvabitch.

I guess they are pretty hardcore about the new branding of a Start button on every device.

OK.

As a former Symbian (UIQ) user, I have to say that were it not for XDA, I wouldn’t be using a WinMob phone.

On it’s own, the Fuze I use doesn’t do some of the basic things (like offer comprehensive profile control) that my SonyEricsson phone did in 2004!

Were it not for XDA, I’d have given up an leveraging the superior capabilities of WinMob and headed off to Apple Land long ago.

To You Know Who:
Please, for the love of god, do not write any reviews of NRG’s ROMs. Keep your thoughts to yourself.

Flasher Ted

the gorilla already got to it first. i did hold back cause of the turn of events because of it.

F* it! I’m getting the Palm Pre when it comes out. If MS is going to be playing with this heavy a hand, it’s time to take my $$$ elsewhere. Without XDA and the customizations that they inspire, and enable, WM5/6/6.1/6.5 wouldn’t be the OS that it should.

I’d prefer a more open architecture. I will be taking my chance with the Web-based OS of the Pre.

now that MS is doing it Apple is joining in on whipping us too. The developer of iBeer for the iPhony is claiming infringement on a Windows version (Diamond Beer). Take a look: http://msmobiles.com/news.php/8097.html
They’re killing us…just take our phones and give us Android…ok I take that back I’m not giving up my Fuze:)

get ‘em while they’re hot, get ‘em while they’re buttered….

** SCAM ** Word is coming out that this was a fake email and is one that I’ve never received.

I think everyone needs to relax. You have to realize that much of what XDA and smartphonejunkie does with mobile programs IS violating the terms of these programs. FOR THE MOST PART the companies do nothing and allow people to modify and freely use their programs.

Its strange that M$ is able to wipe out rapidshare accounts. How can they log in and just delete everything?

This really does suck. Instead of wasting time by looking online for people who make their own software better, they should dedicate their time and resources to making their own software better.

who said they wiped out anything? the links were removed. the people who had the links where told to remove the downlods.

an in the end if there is a copyright infringement that is proven through legal action or charges, then rapid share (like the music sharing companies) has to take down the links to protect itself from prosecution.

I highly DOUBT MS took the accounts down, but they probably did pressure the companies (like Rapidshare) hosting the files.

If MS was taking legal action, shouldn’t it be coming from their Legal Department, i remember hearing this dudes name before and when his email was traced it originated from the UK, isn’t MS headquartered in Seattle???

I think someone is pulling a fast one…Internet Investigator???? Seriously???

As i see it they did it only because it has to do with an unreleased system.

All those years of modded windows mobile 5,6,6.1 microsoft said nothing.

So i think it is little bit early to say that they do not want 6.5 on older devices…

Da_G said that they wiped out over 5 gigs of his ROMs.

since i can only talk for myself – i am helping to investigate more into this. it is too early to tell but more info will be available soon.

till then keep an eye on this for further updates to come.

We should give M$ the time it needs to deploy the new OS to their OEMs (HTC, etc), who will in turn release the OS to their MOs (Mobile Operators), who will in turn customize the ROMs further for their particular branding (Sprint, Verizon, etc).

The OS will eventually become public and be released on multiple new devices. At this point, the MOs and OEMs will get the mind-share that they wanted as part of their purchase of the OS from M$. This represents a significantly large investment on their part. Once they get a lot of device sales, they’ll be happy about recouping their “up-front” costs.

After that, the chefs will likely be able to get back to work cooking in the kitchen without M$ looking over their shoulder.

IMHO of course…

i have proof of this letter telling xda to remove da_g’s thread is a hoax.

the same thing happened to another site and they found out this guy is a hoax.

What crappy reporting. This whole issue of Microsoft telling one prson in XDA to stop his tinkering with wm 6.5 is absurd. If I was you Doug Smith, I would stop reporting and crawl back into the hole you came out from. Why don’t you do some invetigating before you come out with this crap.
For one, this is all one big HOAX by a Jelous idiot Named James Young!……”The James Young 6.5 Rom Hoax”

Enough said!

@Vinnie: What part of my article wasn’t true? If you read on XDA posted BY FLAR that they had received a letter from Microsoft and had pulled all the links to the 6.5 ROM’s by Da_G. That is EXACTLY what I reported. nothing I said was not true, so your claim of irresposibility is absurd. I would think that if FLAR at XDA reacted to something like this, that there is value in it, and is newsworthy. Instead of questioning me and my reporting perhaps you should send XDA and FLAR a nasty email/comment lie you’ve done here and see how you go with that? Furthermore, a lot of very credible websites have linked to MY story. I would love to see you hash this out with BGR! So if they thought it was credible, then I can rest assured that I was right in publishing my article.

As for crawling back in my hole, you have no idea the EFFORT, TIME, and MONEY I have put into my websites and forums. When you can come out of your hole and contribute to a community like I, my team, my friends do, then I will listen to your senseless babble.

This alleged hoax may be just that, a hoax, but if it was so certain that it is, then why hasn’t XDA put the links back up? Again, while you attack me, why not attack XDA for not doing further diligence and put the material back up? Again, because they obviously are not convinced either at this point.

I am reading all of the relevant material to the Hoax now and will respond to it and alerat our readers. I am just now crawling out of my hole from staying up to 2:30am upgrading our forums to make our community a better place and try as I might to help people. What did you do last night?

+1 for Doug… The reporting couldn’t get any better.

@ vinnie, this story was first published march 12th and not much was known about it being a hoax yet. If you cared to read the comments before your usless babble you would see that the truth has come out.. such as my comment on the 13th at 6:00am

+1 again for doug.

we have a great family here(admins, moderaters, readers, forum members, etc etc etc)

we report what is happening. when this srarted it appeared to be true. now after looking into it it is a hoax.

if vinnie you can do better than open your own site.

+1 as well for doug

your site is first to pop up each morning and last to be looked over every night. Although this is my first comment, i am constantly browsing the forums and reading up on the stuff. Just thought I’d toss in my support for you.
