Better Outlook Mobile Integration

090818-triage0

I must admit that I had a difficult time coming up with some pithy angle to this app (the other contributors are a tough act to follow). It’s not cute or fun, but it is really practical. So I’m going to go with the straight-faced, utilitarian approach to introducing you to this app (this post gives me a rest from having to be hilarious all of the time).

With that said, let me introduce you to EmailTriage, from Dale Lane, a plugin for your Outlook that, according to Dale helps “triage the emails. The application adds a context menu to emails that lets you create a new To Do item in Outlook Tasks, or a new diary entry in Outlook Calendar.

So if someone sends you an email asking you to do something, with one tap you can create a new To Do list item, pre-filling it with information from the email.

And if someone sends you an email about an event or meeting you need to go to, with one tap you can create a new Calendar item, prefilling it with information from the email.”

I’ve tried it out and it delivers the goods. One of those apps that is so simple, yet so useful.

Gosh, not being funny is a real challenge!

Nice and simple. It would be nice if the app could filter out the HTML stuff like it does with MIME, but it is useful as is. FYI, the latest version puts the menu items in the open email dialog intead of the email summary, which is really where they should be.

I did notice that although I canceled a test task and appointment, they still appeared and I had to delete them. But I don’t expect to be running too many tests, so not an issue.

It also did not Mess up ThumbCal, my default task/app application, which is a good thing. The tool opens the default task/calendar screens, but most of the info is already filled in.

@jimski: Dale actually had the same html question asked in his post and he said it was “a bit of an issue.”

Why don’t you post your other concerns in a comment directly to him.

Yup, probably will later today after I thoroughly test. Hate to make comments to a developer without being absolutely sure of the facts. They are busy enough so I don’t like leading them down dead ends.

Many thanks for the post, and the kind comments.

RE: HTML tags – I’ve made a first stab at removing the HTML tags and characters. Not sure I’ve considered everything, but it’s better than it was.

RE: Cancelling tasks… By the time you are shown the task, it has already been created. Although you can’t cancel the displayed task, you could click Menu -> Delete to get rid of it.

Hope this helps!

@DaleLane – I went back in and tested again. You can delete an entry (Menu/Delete) as soon as it has been created (like in case you accidently click task instead of appt). Once you go into edit though, tapping Cancel just cancels the edit but the task/app is committed. Not a big deal. More like an observation.

Good news regarding the HTML tags. With them in the message, things do get messy.

One other suggestion. For tasks, you might want to add start date=today (and maybe the same for due date-can always edit). Looks like info is filled in for appts but nothing for tasks.

Thanks for your efforts.

@DaleLane: Just tried the latest version and it looks “much” cleaner. I tried a half dozen messages and they all came over nicely, but on one that was a reply to a reply, I did get some formatting information contained in { } brackets, like referencing that the reply was in blue.

Glad to see my little (and no-nonsense) post has progressed the app and world peace (okay, maybe just the former).

@jimski

Ah, I hadn’t thought of that… you could get:

<style>
cssStyle1 : { styleinfo }
</style>

And all my code will do will get rid of the <style> tags, not the contents.

I guess the same will happen with stuff like JavaScript, applets, etc.

Ah well… I might come back and take a look at it another night.

I just discovered this after a suggestion from someone at ppcgeeks. Was exactly what I needed. Thank you to the developer!
