AT&T Fuze Internet Sharing (Tethering) Revisited
Back in November Doug posted a great step by step guide to setting up internet sharing on your Fuze. This trick is intended to let you use the 3G data connection of your Fuze to get internet onto your PC/laptop without signing up for the expensive plans AT&T provides. Well the other day my cable was down so I reviewed the step-by-step and realized that it was something I could turn into a cab for everyone so it wasn’t a manual process. So, here’s the new step-by-step:
Install the cab provided in the first post here. Now connect your Fuze to your PC over USB and when the connection popup occurs you need to choose Internet Sharing – the bottom option (if you don’t get that popup go to Settings – Connections – USBtoPC and check the box at the bottom to ask you for the type of connection). Once connected open up the Internet Sharing on your Fuze in your Start – Programs directory and change the drop down box to MediaNet and press the left soft key connect’. That’s all there is to it.
By the way, Anudeep tested this and found out that his custom ROM could now connect to his PC over ActiveSync so the registry value changed was the problem and the solution so if you cannot connect using a custom ROM you may get an added benefit from this. The cab is little more than a replacement for an existing registry value that works to make it act like it is deleted (it’s a garbage value to trick your phone).
As you know, we’re not advising you to tether or assuring you that AT&T will not charge you for excessive use of tethering. Technically, you need to pay to tether your Fuze but many people who use tethering infrequently have found that doing this non-abusively tends to go unnoticed.

I have wmwifirouter but use it sparingly. Curious; why no tethering issues? I think that the data flow would show, and using it clearly violates the TOS on my standard phone data plan ["plans...cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of... any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers."] Maybe business and personal TOS are different?
When AT&T stumbled onto this, you’re going to have to report back to us how much your bill is when they tack on all those extra data charges.
It’s my understanding that AT&T will charge an an extra 15.00 per month to tether, and cap your downloads at 5 gb per month, with a 5 cent charge for every kilobyte over that (or something like that).
I haven been tethering for about 2 months on my fuze with no problem, i just wish i could monitor my usage as it’s a work phone and the phone guy wont give me access
.
Hi Terry,
Did you tether before getting the correct data plan? I have tethered with att’s mediamax plan (which i believe is a plan NOT meant for tethering?). So will att put me on the correct plan and charge an extra $15 a month or will they bill me per KB for all the usage?
Hi guys I’m having trouble getting this to work on OS X 10.5. Could anyone help me with that It very much appreciated!
All this seems good on the phone side, what are the steps needed on the PC side to get it to see the FUZE as a LAN/Internet connection? Is there a ‘modem’ driver that can be installed to show the FUZE as a network device?
JM- if you have it plugged in that should be it. It should pop up in Vista as an available connection. If you don’t have a connection it will kick in as your primary connection. if you’re on a desktop try unplugging your modem and plugging in your Fuze…when you go to connections you should see it.
I can’t get it to work. I’m on a ACER netbook running XP. The phone side looks ok, but XP pulls up the “Found New Hardware Wizard” and wants to install something.
Im having an issue with this…when i first installed this a couple months ago it worked great and i had only used it like once or twice and only used it to check some email and other small things. Nothing that was heavy bandwidth. and now when i try it i get a bubble that says connection has been disconnected by a third party. Has att figured out a way to stop this? Has anyone else had this issue?
this worked great setting up tethering quickly with my fuze. The problem that I am a having is that once i disconnect the tether I am unable to connect via actvivesync. The computer will only recognize the fuze as a modem and not give me the sync nor disk drive option. I would guess this is a settings issue, but i am not having any luck. I have a stock rom, which I am embarassed to admit, but it should not be an OS issue… Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,Craig
Mike,
I have the same problem you have, get a notice on the phone that i’ve been disconnected by third party. please advise if there are any fixes or workarounds.
thank
Turkstock,
Ive been looking all over the place and tried to modify the tether manually instead of using the cab and its still being blocked. So no luck finding a solution yet on this side. But still hoping someone has an answer.
Has anyone who is having this problem tried the registry editor from the original article?
http://www.fuzemobility.com/how-to-set-up-internet-sharing-tethering-on-the-att-fuze/
I have not tried it yet, but plan to tonight…
I have used this cab for the past cpl months. I have had no problems with it. I installed and setup as per instructions. went straight to the web and no problems
I HAVE a data plan through Sprint (Data Everything 1500) with a Touch Pro that I’ve cracked using the RegEdit method. I do NOT have a tethering plan; however everything seems to work great.
Do I need to worry about my data-rate and use it sparingly, lest I be “discovered” using my phone as a modem, or with an unlimited plan, am I fine? Can they track that sort of thing?
ok what i want to know is if i update my fuze to the new rom will the tethering registry tweak still work or will i not be able to tether anymore? i really want to update to get rid of the gps issues but not if it means i wont be able to tether anymore
Yes you will be able to tether with the new htc rom update. IMO you would be better off using the free wifi sharing program…… You could also fix your GPS using some of the tweaks listed on this site and not have to update your rom at all….
Quite frankly, ATT can kiss my ass if they think either my company or I are going to pay them an additional monthly fee on top of the existing “unlimited” data plan to use what amounts to the exact same data connection. How many times do they think we should pay for the same connection? Could you imagine having to pay a fee for each protocol used over a cable modem? Cellular companies are ridiculous and their pricing model is like something out of 1970!
It may be time to start looking for a different cell provider…
I have saved to CAB to a temp folder on my desk top (lapptop).
What do I do from there? I’m not quite up to speed as to how the rest will work. I have extracted it but when I connect my Fuze it tries to connect to the net work but no joy. What else to do? Am I suppose to try to copy any thing to the device? I tried copying the CAB to the device and it wont take it either.
I have used this CAB file on my TP1 on AT&T and works perfectly!! Thank You!
Now I want to get a Tilt2 on AT&T and wonder how I will go about tethering that the same way as I do on my TP1?
I’ve been tethering with two Samsungs, one runs WM6.0 standard, the other WM6.1Pro. No modifications to the phones needed, however, on the PC side, you want to configure your dial up settings to use wap.cingular, not isp.cingular. On your bill, the only way to tell the difference between data used for the phone or the PC is the amount of KB. I’ve been consistently using an average of 6GB/month between the two for over a year, saving myself $100/month in bs data charges. Now, I’m looking at the Pure, and the HTC website says it supports tethering, and it comes with a cable. Will this registry mod work with the Pure also? It does seem to share a lot of engineering with the Tilt 2.

Why not just showcase wmwifirouter? Not going to get you into trouble over tethering issues, and can connect multiple PCs, and even on the go!
